What's the disadvantage of HRC fuse?

What is HRC fuse?

HRC fuse (high rupturing capacity fuse) is one kind of fuse, where the fuse wire carries a short circuit current in a set period. If the fault occurs in the circuit then it blows off. The HRC fuse is made with glass otherwise some other kind of chemical compound. HRC Fuse Type.

Today we will talk about the disadvantage of HRC fuse- The surface

Most of people when receive the HRC fuse, We think that the goods should be like this beautiful white teeth:

But actually the goods we receive are mostly like this. Example: SDLDJ-12KV/63A

HRC fuse disadvantage.jpg

The fuse end cap looks not that shining, dark and ugly. We even think that it's used or new, But it's really the original , unused one.

Why?

This is the HRC fuse structure, As we can see,  the fuse end cap, fuse element are the key factors for HRC fuse performance.

What's the raw material of them? Silver, with Tin or Nickel plating.

For the Silver, All Eaton’s Bussmann series HRC Fuselinks use 99.8% pure silver in their elements, ensuring high conductivity and low power (revenue) loss, maximising network efficiency.

From the electrical performance, The purer of the silver, the better continurity it will be, because of Silver's excellent electrical conductivity.

But, the disadvantage is:

Silver is easily to oxidazed in air. This is a new product when open the package, the other is the product open in air for 1 week. We'll see the surface difference.

For example: 3.6WJON65

So there is a question: Is the fuse oxidation effect the performance?

It depends:

When it's used in low voltage, there is some influence if the oxidation layer is thick. So mostly in lower voltage than 220VAC, normally the Silver is not used.

Instead of Copper. Only for some key parts it use, when it appears, If you use the alcohol to clean up the surface, it will heal the shining surface.

When it's used in a higher voltage, Normally HRC current limiting fuse is over 3.6KV, It is able to 'punch through' the tarnish and the switch operates normally. And at higher currents, the small amount of arcing tends to clean a Silver contact. So there is no influence for such voltage level.
